Public relations is a profession that has been around for centuries, dating back at least as far as Ancient Rome. In the 16th century, Francis Bacon began using his position in court to promote himself through what would be later called “publicity stunts.” In 18th century France, there were three types of publicity – secrecy (the media only reported on what was censored), propaganda (government-owned media), and publicity (private media that may have a political agenda). Public relations became more prominent in the early 20th century when large corporations sought to improve their images and were willing to spend money on advertising.
